1. IDENTIFICATION OF THE PRODUCT AND COMPANY

IDENTIFICATION/PRODUCT NAME Soda Crystals, washing soda, washing soda crystals, fine soda crystals, sodium carbonate decahydrate, hydrated soda ash.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A crystalline solid classified herein as a preparation containing sodium carbonate and water together with an anti-caking agent. Generally used as a water softener in laundry operations, as a cleaning aid and as a mild alkali.

2. COMPOSITION/INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS
A preparation containing sodium carbonate and water together with an anti-caking agent.

3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

An alkaline preparation which may cause irritation to the eyes and, on prolonged contact, to the skin.
Irritating to the respiratory system.


4. FIRST AID MEASURES

Inhalation - Remove patient to fresh air, keep warm and at rest. Keep patient under observation at all times. Obtain medical attention if symptoms develop.

Skin contact - Remove contaminated clothing. Dust off promptly and wash the skin with plenty of water until no 'soapy' feeling remains. Obtain medical attention if symptoms develop.

Eye contact - The eye should be thoroughly irrigated for not less than 10 minutes with clean water. Obtain medical attention.

Ingestion - Wash out mouth with water and give plenty of water to drink. Do not induce vomiting. Obtain immediate medical attention if patient feels unwell.

Further Medical Treatment - Symptomatic treatment and supportive therapy as indicated.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

No specific fire fighting procedure given. Not combustible though packaging may burn.


6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

In the event of accidental release wear suitable PPE. The preparation can be gently brushed up and placed in suitable dry, covered containers. The affected area can then be cleaned with water. Do not generate dust.


7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

HANDLING
Maintain good general ventilation. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid acids. Wash promptly with soap and water if skin becomes contaminated. Always follow good personal hygiene when working with this product. Do not breathe dust.

STORAGE
Store in a cool well-ventilated place in the original closed containers. The product will melt at 32/33o C. In open containers, the product may lose water of crystallisation. Avoid contact with aluminium, zinc, tin and their alloys.


8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS /PERSONAL PROTECTION

PERSONAL PROTECTION
Exposure limits - 10mg/m3 total dust; 5mg/m3 respirable dust.
Ventilation - Provide adequate general ventilation.
Respiratory protection - Use approved RPE for dusts, or suitable LEV.
Eye protection - Goggles.
Hand protection - Gloves unless skin contact can be avoided.
Skin - Overalls and boots where appropriate.


9. PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

Appearance
- Fine white crystals
Odour - None
Bulk Density - 0.8g/ml approx.
Solubility - Soluble in water (26% w/w wrt anhydrous salt). Insoluble residue (up to 1%) will dissolve in dilute acids.
pH value - 11.7 (10% solution wrt crystals).
Ignition temperature - Does not burn
Melting point - 32/33 degrees C (forms solution)

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

Decomposition products - Loses water of crystallisation on prolonged standing in air and when heated to 32 degrees  C.

Hazardous reactions - Liberates carbon dioxide when mixed with acid. Solutions may react with new surfaces of aluminium and zinc and their alloys to produce hydrogen.


11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Inhalation - High concentrations of dust will irritate the respiratory system.
Skin contact - May cause skin irritation resulting from removal of natural greases.
Eye contact - Irritating to the eyes. May cause corneal damage. Permanent damage is unlikely.
Ingestion - Ingestion of large doses may result in a burning sensation in the mouth and throat and corrosion of the gastrointestinal tract with nausea and vomiting.


12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS: Based on bulk product.
High concentrations in receiving waters can cause long term adverse effects on the aquatic environment by raising pH. Low toxicity to fish.


13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

Disposal should be in accordance with local, county or national legislation.


14. TRANSPORT INFORMATION

Not regulated for transport.
